for when it all grows quiet
a poem to remember yourself kindly
when the last embers of your life
drift quietly into the stars,
remember the strength you carried
each time you tended your scars.
you fell more times than you mention,
met silence you could not explain,
cried into pillows at midnight
and still woke up steady again.
you wore your ache like a secret,
folded it neat in your chest,
laughed when the world grew too heavy
so no one would notice the rest.
you may have been rich in your longing,
or poor in the things you could keep,
but think of the skies you have witnessed,
the promises night let you keep.
think of the mornings that found you
half-healed but willing to try,
the courage it took just to stay here,
to breathe when you wanted to cry.
and if there is one thing you carry
past all that you conquered or knew,
let it be this gentle reminder:
you survived being you.
so do one thing, will you?
don’t you ever regret it all,
life was tough as it was pretty,
and throughout it you stood tall.
